Clement was the son of Mr and Mrs Clement Agnew, 42 Calder Cresent, Armadale.


Clement Joined the Navy at age fourteen and a half, and he received his initial training on the Caledonia, and was drafted to HMS Hawkins. He Joined the Royal Oak on the 12th September 1939.


Prior to joining the Navy Clement worked on the pithead at the Dardanelles Pit owned by Messrs William Dixon Ltd.

Clement’s father also Clement had served in the Navy during the First War.

Hugh Roberts Black is listed as “Hugh Vaughan Roberts” on the Army lists.


Hugh was the son of Christopher and Christina Roberts, of Pretoria Cottage, South St., Armadale.


Before Hugh’s first Birthday his father Christopher Roberts (4218 Private C Roberts 2nd Royal Welsh Fusiliers) was killed in action on the 1st September 1918 whilst serving in France.


Hugh’s mother Christina later remarried Mr Charles Black and resided at 18 High Academy Street Armadale. (This would explain why Hugh is listed on the Armadale War Memorial as Hugh Roberts Black)


Hugh was killed by a Japanese Sniper whilst bringing in a wounded soldier.

Prior to enlisting in 1940 Hugh was a plasterer with Mr Robert Easton, Armadale.
